In the past week, The Bridal Journey asked our community one simple question.
Are weddings more expensive than you expected?

More than six thousand brides responded. What followed was one of the clearest and most eye-opening sentiment shifts we have ever seen. The findings reveal a new reality for modern couples planning in 2025 and a rising frustration that goes far deeper than the price tag itself. Below is what brides are genuinely experiencing right now.

Expectation Versus Reality: The Budget Gap is Widening

Before planning began, most brides believed they had a solid understanding of the numbers. Only a quarter expected to spend over eighty thousand. Once real quotes started coming in, everything changed.

โ€ขFifty three percent are now spending more than eighty thousand
โ€ข Only seven percent are managing to stay under thirty thousand
โ€ข Almost one in five sits in the thirty to fifty thousand range

This gap between expectation and reality is at the heart of the shock couples are feeling. It is not that brides are unrealistic. It is that the market has shifted and the true cost of a wedding in 2025 is far higher than many anticipate.

Venue Pricing: The First and Biggest Shock

When asked about venue quotes:
โ€ขForty three percent received quotes between twenty and forty thousand
โ€ข Twenty two percent received quotes between forty and sixty thousand
โ€ข Fourteen percent were quoted sixty thousand or more

Most brides described the same reaction.
The venue pricing they expected was not the pricing they received.

Eighty two percent said venue costs were higher than expected. And overwhelmingly, the issue was not the fee itself but what the fee actually included.

Hidden Costs: The Silent Budget Killers

Across hundreds of comments, one theme was louder than any other.
Hidden costs are everywhere.

Brides reported unexpected extras such as:
โ€ข staffing and service charges
โ€ข power, lighting and production fees
โ€ข bump in and bump out costs
โ€ข minimum spends that did not move with guest count
โ€ข cake cutting and bar upgrades
โ€ข mandatory vendor lists
โ€ข hire items not included in the base price

In many cases, these additions pushed the final figure thirty to fifty percent higher than the initial quote.

Florals, Catering and Entertainment: Categories That Consistently Blow Out

While venues absorb most of the initial attention, brides explained that the real budget spikes came later.

Catering
Often exceeded the venue cost especially with outside caterers and surcharges.

Florals
Described as extremely expensive with labour driving prices up across the board.

Entertainment
Live bands quoted between thirty and seventy thousand in some regions.

Across the board, couples underestimated these three categories more than any others.

Social Media is Reshaping Expectations

Many brides shared the same feeling.
The weddings they see online are no longer reflective of what is considered achievable.

Perfectly styled multi day celebrations, content creators, cinematic moments, high production lighting and luxury venues have become the reference point. Without realising it, couples begin enquiring with aspirational venues and premium vendors that sit far above their original budget.

This expectation shift is quietly driving much of todayโ€™s cost shock.

The Emotional Impact: Overwhelm is Now Part of the Planning Experience

The comments were not just about money. They were about how the process feels.

Brides spoke about
โ€ข overwhelm
โ€ข confusion
โ€ข disillusionment
โ€ข financial pressure
โ€ข frustration around transparency

Many admitted that without family contributions, they would have postponed or cancelled. One bride summarised it perfectly. Even with a good income, it still feels unattainable.

A New Reality for 2025 Brides

The findings reveal a clear truth. Modern couples are not shocked because they expect too much.
They are shocked because the starting price rarely reflects the final cost. When you peel back the layers, the add ons, the production, the pressure and the premium wedding economy, the real numbers begin to make sense. This is the new wedding landscape.

Where Brides Go From Here: Practical Ways to Navigate the Cost

The reality is confronting but there are ways to protect your budget without sacrificing beauty or meaning.

Choose a venue with strong inclusions
Furniture, lighting and in house catering can save significant amounts.

Reduce guest count before reducing style
Smaller weddings allow for elevated moments without financial strain.

Ask vendors for all additional costs upfront
Transparency is the best antidote to sticker shock.

Repurpose florals and dรฉcor
Ceremony arrangements can become reception features.

Lock in pricing early
Rates tend to increase annually especially for peak dates.

Step away from social media comparisons
Your wedding does not need to look like the internet to be extraordinary.

In Closing

The wedding industry is in a moment of transition. Costs have risen, expectations have evolved and transparency has fallen behind. The more we speak openly about the realities the more empowered brides feel when planning one of the most meaningful days of their lives.

The Bridal Journey will continue to share real data, real experiences and real guidance so couples can plan with clarity rather than confusion.
