TBJ: Your design process is deeply intuitive, often sparked by how fabric unexpectedly falls or shifts. Was there a defining moment or unexpected inspiration that shaped this bridal collection?
Toni Maticevski: “Being part of someone’s special day is inherently inspiring. For me, it’s all about a feeling and creating a mood. This collection drew upon the gestures from Resort 25, referencing waves and ruffles, so I continued to explore this with a softness of touch and added drama.”
TBJ: You’ve spoken about “enhanced distortions in the silhouette” and balancing structure with fluidity. How does this concept translate into bridalwear?
Toni Maticevski: “I love the unexpected, especially when it comes to playing with proportions, and creating a silhouette. In this collection, you’ll see pressed organza cascades that flounce and envelop the body, fine jersey draped to evoke modern incarnations of classical goddesses, and waving panels that trace the body’s curves. It’s more interesting to create shapes to dress the body in a way that’s about exploring proportions, rather than hiding or disguising.”
TBJ: What role does experimentation play in your creative process, and how do you refine an idea into a finished gown?
Toni Maticevski: “It’s an ongoing evolution—watching how fabrics react, and transform is always a discovery. As I work, ideas shift, sometimes in ways I never expected. That’s when the magic happens.”
TBJ: Many of your designs evolve from past-season concepts that continue to grow in your mind. Did any elements from previous collections resurface in a new way for this bridal collection?
Toni Maticevski: “Every design has a point of difference no matter how minimal, I’m guided by instinct which constantly takes me in new directions. So, while certain elements may echo past collections, they always emerge with a fresh perspective. For example, textures and ruffles are emphasised here, resembling the waves seen in the Resort 25 Collection.”
“There is a fluidity to these pieces that is both feminine and languid.”

Bridalwear in 2025: A New Perspective
TBJ: Bridal fashion is shifting, with modern brides seeking individuality over tradition.
How do you design for today’s bride while maintaining timelessness?
Toni Maticevski: “I like to challenge traditional notions of what a modern bride should be. I want to encourage brides to step outside of expectations. It’s about empowering them to command attention and feel confident in standing out. Timelessness doesn’t have to mean conformity—it’s about creating something unique that feels authentic to the bride’s personality and vision.”
TBJ: Your pieces are known for their sculptural beauty and avant-garde sensibility. How do
you strike a balance between artistry and wearability for bridalwear?
Toni Maticevski: “The artistry comes in the way fabrics move and interact with the body—whether it’s the fluidity of fine jersey or the dramatic cascades of organza—while wearability comes from the careful attention to how these pieces fit and move with the wearer. It’s about making a statement without compromising on comfort or how it shapes the bride’s experience on her special day.”
TBJ: You once described clothes as “living things.” How do you see bridal gowns in that light do they evolve with the woman who wears them?
Toni Maticevski: “Every woman brings a unique perspective to the way she wears a dress. The Maticevski bride is not defined by a single persona—she’s a woman of the world, with diverse tastes, cultures, and experiences. She is a free thinker, compassionate, and proud of who she is. I want to inspire brides to imagine beyond what they thought possible. Bridal gowns are living things—they evolve with the wearer. The fluidity of the fabric, the movement, and the way the gown responds to her body creates a deep connection. It’s about crafting something that feels like it truly belongs to her, shifting with her, allowing her to feel powerful, confident, and beautiful on her special day.”

Signature Details & Collection Highlights
TBJ: Can you walk us through some standout pieces in this collection? What makes them special?
Toni Maticevski: “That’s hard! They’re all special in their own way.”
TBJ: You often incorporate elements like ruffles, asymmetry, or unexpected embellishments. Were there any particular textures, materials, or techniques that defined this collection?
Toni Maticevski: “I’d say the textures are central to this collection. The drapery of fine jersey, slinky satin, and finely frayed ribbon work create subtle yet significant textural layers. Waving panels, controlled by crinoline, sinuously trace the curves of the body. The palette is purely white, with textural nods to pressed organza, offering a sense of purity and effortless polish.”
TBJ: If you could describe the mood or essence of this collection in three words, what would they be?
Toni Maticevski: “Textural, Refined, Effortless.”

New York Bridal Fashion Week & Showroom Experience
TBJ: How does the experience of showcasing your work in a showroom setting differ from a runway presentation? What do you hope visitors take away from seeing the gowns in person?
Toni Maticevski: “The showroom setting offers a more intimate experience, allowing visitors to engage with each look at their own pace, compared to the fleeting moment of a runway. Designed like a gallery space, the looks are displayed on mannequins – fashion as wearable art. I hope that our visitors take in every nuance and detail, helping to share memories, experiences and wishes.”
TBJ: For those visiting your showroom, what should they pay attention to? Are there any hidden details or design nuances that reveal themselves up close?
Toni Maticevski: “The showroom is surrounded by large windows, and when the sun shines, the sequins on the gowns catch the light, creating a beautiful sparkle. There is the finely frayed ribbon work on the Walking on Air Gown, and I guess the hidden versatility of the Ashlyn Jersey Gown.”

The Future of Maticevski Bridal
TBJ: How do you see your bridalwear evolving in the coming years?
Toni Maticevski: “The showroom setting offers a more intimate experience, allowing visitors to engage with each look at their own pace, compared to the fleeting moment of a runway. Designed like a gallery space, the looks are displayed on mannequins – fashion as wearable art. I hope that our visitors take in every nuance and detail, helping to share memories, experiences and wishes.”
TBJ: If you could design a custom wedding look for anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
Toni Maticevski: “I stopped creating custom almost 10 years ago now – but if I were to, I’d be enamoured with the idea of dressing iconic women like Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall and Princess Diana to the present, Selena Gomez or Zendaya.”
