Derya Koch, Director of Victorian Dermal Clinic and owner of Dermal Hub ‘Halo’.

Consider this your pre-wedding check list. Optional, of course – but everything is laid out so you can navigate this whole “pre-wedding beauty routine” situation with some confidence and more importantly know when to start.

Talking to The Bridal Journey, Victorian Dermal dermal clinician Derya Koch has handed over a plethora of skincare tips and tricks and considering she’s the woman the Melbourne Models and Celebrities look to and depend upon for perfect skin – we’re taking notes.

Victorian Dermal also have ‘Wedding Packages’ for The Bridal Journey Readers. These are customised packages to ensure your skin is looking its best on your wedding day.

Derya is kicking goals also founding Dermal Hub which she created with her sister and launched the ‘Halo’ last year. Did you know 80% of facial ageing is caused by the sun? That’s why Derya designed the ‘halo’ face shield which is a visor available in a variety of coloured lenses which covers the majority of the face, providing a UV 400 protection shield against damage caused by harmful sun rays.

Does “preventative botox” actually work? We also spoke to Dr Master (who also works at Vic Dermal) about Dermal Fillers and Anti-wrinkle injections.

When is the best time pre wedding to start seeing a specialist to get that loved up bridal glow?

I would recommend brides to start a minimum of 8 weeks prior to the wedding day, this will enable a thorough skin consultation tailoring the most appropriate skin care regime and treatment program suitable for your skin type and skin condition.  Our specialist assessment will give you the best chance at achieving clear and radiant skin. There are several different treatments available to help give you a beautiful complexion – each tailored to meet your specific skin concerns.

We create our wedding packages by taking into consideration different skin concerns and how much time you have. The wedding packages focus on consistent treatments that work in conjunction with high-quality skincare.

Dr Master who works at the clinic also recommends that having a consult on cosmetic treatment (dermal fillers and anti wrinkle injections) at least a good 6 months before to trial what works well and is appealing.

What do you recommend as a home care routine?

Your skin journey starts with skincare, we use cosmeceutical grade skincare, which contains active ingredients at the right concentration and technology that aids in the delivery into the skin. Cosmeceutical skincare is corrective, promoting healthy skin function. Prior to using any cosmeceutical skincare, a skin assessment is necessary. Through skin analysis we can determine your skin needs and recommend the most suitable ingredients, a skincare prepping phase for approx. Two weeks in necessary to create a healthy skin environment and accelerate results.

Products that you swear by?

Any successful skincare routine should include the following ingredients as an introductory level;

  • Cleanser- Regular cleansing is essential to keeping your skin looking radiant and healthy. Removing of dirt, oil, and other unwanted debris. Throughout the day the skin on your face is continually covered with bacteria, pollutants, viruses, dirt, and old (dead) skin
  • Cleansing helps anti-aging products and treatments work properly.
  • Cleansing helps maintain proper pore size.
  • Cleansing encourages proper skin hydration and prevents the production of excess oils.

Hyaluronic acid which has the greatest ability to retain moisture out of just about anything: close to 1000 times its weight in water, to be specific. This improves barrier function, improves hydration leaving the skin plump and hydrated.

Vitamin B3, is one of the best forms of the B vitamins for your skin. Also known as Niacin, Vitamin B3 can help to improve the condition of the skin, helping to treat rosacea, acne, eczema, dermatitis, hyper pigmentation, sun-damaged, ageing and dry skin – so it’s a must-have vitamin for healthy, glowing skin!

Vitamin C- when topically applied, vitamin C provides a skin-rejuvenating effect by improving collagen synthesis in the skin that slows down with ageing, as well as limiting skin damage from free radicals.6,10 Collagen is a structural support protein that is essential for firm, youthful skin.

Moisturiser – Moisturising everyday can reduce the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness. Both extremes are harmful for skin and cause common skin conditions like acne.

Physical Sunscreen-often called sunblock, is physical: It contains active mineral ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide (which are naturally broad spectrum, meaning they protect against both UVA and UVB rays). Physical Sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin. They are often referred to as physical blockers.

Pros of Physical Sunscreen:

  • Offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays and is naturally broad spectrum
  • Protects from the sun as soon as it’s applied, no wait needed
  • Lasts longer when in direct UV light (but not when doing physical activities that cause the skin to get wet or sweat)
  • Less likely to cause a stinging irritation on the skin, making it better for sensitive skin
  • Better for those with heat-activated skin conditions such as (Pigmentation- Melasma, Rosacea and redness) since it deflects the heat and energy given off by the sun away from the skin
  • Less likely to be pore-clogging, making it ideal for acne-prone skin
  • Longer shelf life

What are your top tips for getting wedding ready?

Do’s

Start a skin rich diet; Your diet is a constant reminder that what you put into your body will impact your skin’s appearance. Skin food includes a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, Omega 3 fatty acids such as those found in herring, salmon and mackerel are necessary for plump and supple skin. Leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach and broccoli promote your iron intake, and sweet potatoes, tomatoes and walnuts also have essential benefits. Green tea also boasts detoxifying properties with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as being known as a metabolic booster.

Minimise your UV exposure that can lead to pigmentation, collagen breakdown, dry and dehydrated skin.

Start your skin treatment journey as soon as possible.

Start an active skincare regime, sure to have your skin analysed to ensure the appropriate ingredients are recommend for your skin type.

– be sure to have your skin analysed prior to trying any products. Do not use any new products or have any treatment a month prior to the wedding day – although there are some specific events treatments that are best to have a week prior to the wedding day to give that ultimate glow such as; ULTRAEVENTS  which we use to tighten, lift and smooth out the skin’s texture, creating a smooth base for makeup application best performed a week prior to.

Dr Master suggests when talking about injectables is to see exactly what you like. Enhance the lips, test the units of Botulinium toxin in areas that may need some love and use the same formula within about 2 months of your big day!

One of the biggest issues we experience once we get into our late 20s is aging around the eye. How do we prevent lines or perhaps even hollowness around that area for the big day?

Eyes are an important feature contributing to a fresh youthful look. The cause of hollow eyes is due to the skin in this area being thinner than elsewhere on the body and becomes looser under the eyes as we age. Hollowness is due to fat loss in the lower eyelids, this is due to hereditary factors, aging and volume loss.

Topical ingredients such as growth factors, kojic acid and vitamin c can improve collagen production leading to an increase in volume and lighten the darkness in this area.

Some of the options for dark hollow eyes include; laser resurfacing – Improving fine lines and increasing volume through new collagen formation. Q-Switch laser which stimulates collagen production and treats the pigmentation resulting in a reduction in the darkness. Ultraformer- (HIFU) Is particularly good for dropping eyelids, loss of elasticity and hollowness in the tear trough.

Let’s talk, décolletage and patchy skin from sun damage on the chest area. How does one get rid of this particularly for brides who are wearing something strapless or low cut?

Remembering on your wedding day, it’s not just about your face, there are many treatment options that can improve the skin on your chest, neck, décolletage and backs of your hands. The treatments are focused on removing pigmentation, facial veins and redness and rejuvenate the skin. The type of treatment/laser will depend on the diagnosis and individual skin type and condition.

Nothing makes people run the other way faster than seeing someone in real life who went overboard and looks like a statue of themselves: zero facial expression and overly puffy. What about cosmetic enhancements? What do you recommend for brides and the timeline to get these treatments done?

Dr Mobin clarifies that “My mantra is to enhance, refresh and look natural. Movement is not a bad thing! I usually treat patients with deep wrinkles initially with Botulinium toxin, gradually reducing the dose as we top it up on a regular basis. Once the deep wrinkles are under control, then lower doses can be used to achieve the same result.  I believe in cycling medication and less is often more. Any imbalances can be naturally enhanced without being noticed. My patients are often treated and no one noticed, they simply comment you look great or fresh.”

What is preventative botox?

Dr Mobin suggests that “Preventative Botulinium Toxin is the use of this “Neuromodulator” (which come in a number of brand names, such as above), is to slow the movement of the muscles that keep traumatising the skin and causing permanent trauma to the epidermis. These wrinkles cannot recover as well when contributed by ageing process –  loss of hydration in the epidermis (superficial), loss of collagen in the dermis (middle layer) and loss of fat (deep layer).  If prevention is used, the the skin has a chance to recover from that trauma and it also changes the habit of “frowning”, “raising” and “squinting”.

As a working mum, I rarely get time to myself these days however, I always make sure I start my day off with a little self love- this includes my usual morning beauty routine which sets me on track for the day. I’m all about keeping it natural and effortless most days but love to style my hair using a curling tong or straightening iron every now and then
