An interview with khya from One Day Bridal, the wedding dress designer of the moment

Established in 2011, One Day Bridal has cemented itself within the fashion industry as a
leader of uniquely designed wedding gowns. Kyha, the Founder and Creative Director
of One Day has successfully built a business that continues to challenge tradition by
responsibly creating fashion forward pieces that embody, empower and elevate
modern women.

You can find the brands Head Office and flagship store nestled in the heart of South Melbourne, however the brands notoriety far precedes the Australian borders. The One Day Bridal brand expanded on a global scale in 2016 when they launched their made to order ‘CHOSEN by One Day’ range internationally.

Beginning her career in the Police Force at the age of nineteen, Kyha had clear ambition and drive working as a prosecutor and later progressing into the water Police. “I come from a family of Policemen and it was an obvious career path for me at that stage of my life”.

After getting married eight years ago, whilst still working in the Force and going through the journey of finding her own wedding dress Kyha struggled to find a wedding dress modern and unique and reflected her own personal style.

“I finally ended up have a custom designed gown, however I found the process difficult and disappointing as my dress on the day was nothing like the original design. This experience left me thinking that no other bride should have to go through what I did. The gap in the bridal industry for modern and more fashion orientated gowns was screaming at me. So I took a leap of faith and created what is now One Day Bridal.”

Advice to avoid large gatherings of more than 100 people – in a bid to limit the spread of the coronavirus – has already prompted many couples to cancel, downsize or postpone imminent wedding ceremonies. The circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and its impact on the Wedding and Events Industry has been huge. The Bridal Journey reached out to Kyha and got all the answers you’ve been searching for, scroll below to see!

What are the buying trends for brides – are they cancelling orders or postponing?
It is still early days and our thoughts are with those couples who are navigating this unprecedented territory. Most brides are eager to continue their journey with us and for those who have a date secured later in the year, they are sticking to their plans. We urge couples planning their wedding to postpone if required, do not cancel.

Have sales been impacted in anyway?
There has been some impact from overseas as our stockists in places like the USA go into lockdown. However, as couples continue to plan their weddings sales have not been impacted. Brides start the search for their gown nine to twelve months out from their date, so we are still seeing many brides for October 2020 weddings.

Are many brides cancelling or postponing weddings?
The trend we are seeing is postponement rather than cancellation.

Have you noticed other changes in buying trends or received feedback from customers?
The strongest trend we’re seeing is a move to buying gowns online using video consultations with our specialist bridal stylists – with a focus on gowns that are available for immediate delivery. It seems to be creating a great level of comfort for couples.

Is One Day still facilitating appointments or are they all virtual now?

To ensure the health and safety of our team and customers, One Day Bridal will be temporarily closing our South Melbourne Boutique, with the intention to reopen on May 1. As we strive to continue to offer our services and support to our brides during this time One Day is proud to offer virtual consultations and gown concierge service.

“For brides that are beginning their shopping journey, our virtual consultation service allows brides to meet with a stylist via a video call, during which we will showcase several gown options that have been selected especially for the bride, all whilst she remains in the safety of her own home. If our brides have fallen in love with a One Day style, our concierge service allows Melbourne-based brides the opportunity to try her favourite gowns on in the safety of her own home, accompanied by our stylist on a video call. To ensure that we are keeping both our customers and the One Day team safe throughout COVID 19, One Day is upholding the highest sanitation practices in delivering this service. This includes cleaning each and every gown prior to delivery and handling each piece with gloved hands. Our online stylist and customer service team are also available to answer questions through One Day’s website.” – Kyha

On Thursday the 2nd Of April the St Martin collection at One Day Bridal launched. An ode to a dear friend, a sailor and most of all, a father. St. Martin tells a tale of adventure and discovery. This fifteen piece collection navigates the uncharted waters of modern. Bridal, exploring a new range of beaded fabrics and silhouettes. The use of subtle draping, knotted fabric and corsetry creates a dynamic collection that is timeless and compelling. We see a nostalgic reference to some of our favourite pieces from previous collections. A fresh approach to design through the use of new fabrics pays homage to these classic designs.

“Kyha and I are both Aries women and I feel very much have a similar passion and drive. Aries woman describes and known to be creative, fiery, independent, stylish and independent. We worked so well together on this collaboration I thought it was fitting to align with our Aries astrology and pull in other famous Aries figures from mythology and pop-culture”.

The One day x Sphere Collection beautifully showcases how designers and stylists can collaborate to create something with raw authenticity that otherwise would not have existed. Driven by customer insights from both one day and sphere that brides were seeking more elevated, cutting edge, and detailed options, Kyha and Sarah felt that together it was the perfect opportunity to create. Both Kyha and Sarah have described the collection as the perfect marriage of the unexpected and the timeless, fusing of cutting edge and etherealism. Brides can expect combinations of corsetry and draping, lace and boning, beading and structure, flowing fabric and intricate detailing.

When and how did the idea of the collection come about?

“At One Day we work really hard at having really strong relationships with our stockists and love hearing feedback. Sarah reached out sometime ago and mentioned that she really felt she had a modern bride that was after an elevated product. With our last One Day Bridal collection having launched in 2018, we knew brides were anticipating and eagerly waiting for a new range to choose from, so we (Sarah & Kyha) thought it was the perfect opportunity to combine our creative minds. Sarah’s expert insight into brides wants and needs garnered from styling countless brides each year and my knowledge of fashion and design together produced something we think is truly unexpected and exciting for brides.” – Kyha

What makes you most excited about launching this new collection?

“I am always looking to create something that has never been done before and was excited about collaborating with Sarah on something unexpected. I love Sarah’s keen eye for bridal styling and fresh ideas for the future of bridal. We know brides will love this collection for its intricate details and modern design elements.” – Kyha

How long have you known Kyha for and what do you think initially drew you two together?

“Kyha has always been a great support and mentor for me, so to work with her in this way was an extremely humbling and exciting experience. Whilst Kyha and I draw from different inspiration we found we had a common aesthetic that complimented each other and we knew would translate into a beautiful collection of gowns.” – Sarah

From a designer perspective, where did you draw your inspiration from for this collection?

“This collection was definitely a process of collaborating on feedback from our brides collectively, drawing on each other for inspiration and personal design aesthetics and working with new fabrics and shapes.” – Kyha

From a Boutique perspective, what made you think brides would absolutely love this collection?

“I am so excited to launch this because I can feel that there is a bride eager for something truly unique that they haven’t seen before, but that they know will stand the test of time.” – Sarah

If you got married tomorrow, what dress from the collection would you wear?

I” would have two, definitely the Portia for the aisle and the Elton for later in the night! The light bounces so beautifully off the sparkles on Elton.” – Kyha

“Hera – it’s basically a recreation of my own wedding gown, I love an off the shoulder and sleeve combination.” – Sarah

“Here at One Day we encourage brides to do their research. The hardest part of finding our dream wedding gown is finding the shape that best suits you complements your figure.
We encourage brides to use tools like Pinterest and Instagram to source inspiration. The bridal world can be so daunting and this is the perfect place for a bride to ease into the chaos. We also ask our brides to try on a range of styles and fabrics to get a clear idea of what is possible. This also helps the bride formulate an understanding of what suits them, what they like on and what they want to steer away from.
From here, our Bridal Consultants help refine this vision. Although, we often find brides will choose a gown they would have never thought to have tried on. This is where the expertise of our Bridal Consultants is unmistakable.”

INBAL DROR

“I like to give a little more than what brides usually see,” said Inbal Dror

Introducing Inbal Dror

I like to give a little more than what brides usually see,” said Inbal Dror, who debuted a new diffusion line this season. The collection had all the sex appeal and sheer fabrics of her couture bridal line, plus red carpet–worthy details like front slits, plunging necklines, and shimmery beads, often tempered by traditional ball skirts and long sleeves. The gowns that will resonate most with brides included a tulle ballerina style with a delicate lace bodice; a dotted tulle one-shouldered dress; and an embroidered lace column and matching overskirt embellished with 3-D flowers. The collection also included “second dress”–appropriate looks, like a long-sleeved feathered dress with a deep V-neck and a beaded, striped gown with insets of light-as-air tulle.

“I love it when the bride integrates with the dress, and they become one, like a second skin. Our bride is confident; sometimes quietly confident, and she is always breathtaking,” the designer explained.

Inbal Dror

As one of the designers who submitted sketches for the upcoming royal nuptials between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Dror doesn’t let working with celebrities throw her off from her true goals. “I want to create dresses for every bride who wants an Inbal Dror dress, even if she can’t do couture,” she said. “I only care about making my brides happy.” And won’t those modern princess-brides be happy to know they might share the same tastes as the woman who took Prince Harry off of the market?

“I treat all my brides with the same care and attention,” said the designer

She added, “Every bride is a celebrity.” We asked the designer how her bridal design process differs from her made-to-measure eveningwear process, and she explained, “The design process is most of the time instantaneous. An idea comes up, and it ripens in my mind. I put it on paper as a sketch and for the most part that is how it stays. Our production is made-to-measure, based on 30 different measurements on the body, which requires great care and involves the bride on a very intimate level.”
